A Step-by-Step Guide for Brain Injury Survivors

Living with a brain injury can make navigating government benefits confusing.
This roadmap shows common programs that may help with income, savings, and financial stability.

You do not need to apply for every program, but this guide helps show where to start.

Disability Benefits Roadmap

Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

The Disability Tax Credit is an important first step because it can unlock other benefits.


You may qualify if:

  • You have a severe and prolonged impairment
  • Your condition affects daily activities
  • A medical practitioner completes the form


Programs unlocked by the DTC include:

• Canada Disability Benefit
• Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

An RDSP helps people with disabilities save for the future.


The government may add:

  • Canada Disability Savings Grants
  • Canada Disability Savings Bonds


You may qualify if:

  • You are under age 60
  • You have an approved Disability Tax Credit
  • You live in Canada

Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)

The Canada Disability Benefit is a new federal benefit designed to reduce poverty for people with disabilities.


You may qualify if:

  • You are 18–64 years old
  • You live in Canada
  • You have an approved Disability Tax Credit
  • Your income meets eligibility requirements

CPP Disability (CPP-D)

CPP Disability provides monthly income support for people who cannot work due to a disability.


You may qualify if:

  • You are under age 65
  • You have a severe and prolonged disability

Ontario Works (OW)

Ontario Works provides financial assistance for people with very low income.


This program can help if you:

  • Have limited income or savings
  • Live in Ontario

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Dental care can be expensive. The Canadian Dental Care Plan helps cover basic dental services for people without dental insurance.


Covered services may include:

  • Dental exams
  • Cleanings
  • X-rays
  • Fillings
  • Some other dental treatments

You may qualify if:

  • Your household income is under $90,000
  • You do not have private dental insurance
  • You are a Canadian resident
  • You have filed your tax return
